Preparing your home for winter checklist

With winter approaching, check out our home preparation checklist that could save you money, your health and sanity when the cold sets in!

Clocks adjusted when daylight savings ends (3am, Sunday 7th April 2024)

    Heating system maintenance

Check fireplace chimney/flue before using for the first time of the year

Reverse your ceiling fans for warmer air (this can save on your heating costs)

    Consider upgrading insulation

Clean your gutters of all debris, leaves etc

    Check channel drains are clear

Check smoke detectors and alarms are working

Are your exterior lights working (consider LED/solar)

Timber windows and doors general operation (can swell in wet weather)

Weatherboards for rot, cracks or splits. If unsure, poke a screwdriver into areas and if they look odd and goes through you may have issues

Check for bubbling paint on wooden surfaces as this could be an indication of potential rot

Lastly, check for exterior holes that mice can get into. They love to come in out of the cold, bring the whole family and settle in your roof!
